USEFUL TIPS FOR SEWING BABY CLOTHES

Before you dive into the rest of the list of sewing patterns, here are some tips for getting started making your own baby clothes, the kit you need and the best fabrics for making baby clothes with and a list of the benefits of making baby clothes.

1. TIPS FOR MAKING BABY CLOTHES

1. Time – babies grow and they grow fast! Make sure you allow enough time to make the outfit so that the baby has plenty of time to wear it.
2. Comfort – think about the comfort of the baby whilst wearing the outfit. Go for fabrics that are lightweight and soft on the skin. Avoid nylon, rayon and polyester as they are quite scratchy fabrics. See my list of the best fabrics to make baby clothes with below.
3. Safety – think about the safety of the fabric. Synthetic fabrics may not catch fire easily, but they can burn badly once they are alight. Cotton and cotton mixes can burn very easily, so make sure to follow fabric guidelines especially if you are making nightwear for a baby.
4. Laundering – Ideally, baby clothes should be super easy to wash in a washing machine. Also, make sure the fabric can be washed at a suitable temperature and won’t shrink. Think about the nature of the outfit you are making. If the outfit you are making is for a special occasion it is less important that it can be easily laundered.
5. Colour and pattern – think about the skin tone / likely skin tone of the baby you are making for. Think also about going with a plain fabric if you are just starting out sewing baby clothes, it will be easier than trying to work with a pattern.

2. WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE BABY CLOTHES

1. SEWING MACHINE

Ideally, you should use a sewing machine to make baby clothes because the stitching will be stronger. This is particularly important for when making clothes for babies who are mobile, crawling and toddling, because there will be a lot of wear on their clothes.

2. SEWING KIT

Here’s a list of the basic things it’s good to have to hand in a sewing kit when you’re making baby clothes.

• 8” Dressmaker’s Shears – super sharp to cut nice clean edges.
• 5” sewing scissors – for cutting out notches, buttonholes, loose threads
• Basic scissors for cutting paper patterns. Inexpensive office scissors will do.
• Needles – for hand-finishing
• Glass head pins go for glass heads rather than plastic, so you can use them with an iron.
• Pincushion – magnetic ones are best for speed
• Seam ripper for undoing stitches
• Tape measure for measuring
• Tailor’s chalk for marking up your fabric
• Transparent rulerso you can see from one marked measure to another

3. THREAD

Mercerized-cotton thread is a great all-rounder for cotton, rayon and linen. Go for size 50, which is medium thickness.

4. FABRIC

Of course, you will need fabric! I’ve put a list of the best fabrics for making baby clothes below.

3. BEST FABRICS FOR MAKING BABY CLOTHES

Here is a list of the best fabrics to sew baby clothes with. These fabrics are great for making baby rompers, baby grows and all sorts of other baby clothes.

Do bear in mind that if you are a complete beginner at sewing it is best to use a fabric that doesn’t have any stretch, as it is much easier to control.And always check a baby clothes pattern for which fabrics are best to use.

• Eyelet cotton
• Broderie Anglaise fabric
• Lawn cotton
• Fleece
• Microfibre
• Bamboo rayon (this will have stretch if it’s mixed with lycra)
• Voile
• Broadcloth
• Jersey knit fabric (not for beginners!)

4. BENEFITS OF MAKING BABY CLOTHES

1. You can make special outfits more cheaply than buying them (the reality is that you won’t really save money by making baby basics)
2. You are creating something unique the baby who wears it
3. It’s more environmentally friendly if you upcycle old clothes as fabric for baby clothes
4. If you’re good at making baby clothes you could sell them to make extra money on Etsy
5. Handmade baby clothes make really meaningful gifts
6. You could discover a new hobby and craft skill
7. Creating something for your baby is a great way to relax and unwind
8. It’s a great way to while away the final weeks before your baby is due

5. WHAT CAN I SEW FOR A BABY?

Here’s a list of ideas of things you can sew for a baby aside from baby clothes:

• Babychanging mat
• Babyblanket
• Burp cloths
• Baby bibs
• Crinkle Sheets
• Baby quilt

6. A GUIDE TO USING PDF SEWING PATTERNS

PDF patterns are patterns you can download from the internet, print out and use to sew from. The majority of PDF patterns contain the pattern cutting guide and also useful information to help you cut out and then sew the item of clothing.

If you are new to sewing or if you want to start making baby clothes on a budget, you can use any of the wonderful free PDF sewing patterns in the roundup I have put together.

To use a PDF pattern, you need to download it and then print it out. When printing it out, make sure that you have the scale set to 100% so that the pattern prints at the correct size. This will avoid any sizing issues (you don’t want to find you’ve ended up making something that will only fit a doll!).

Once the whole pattern has been printed across numerous pieces of paper, you can use tape on the back of each sheet to put the pattern together to work from.

7. IS IT WORTH IT TO MAKE BABY CLOTHES?

Have you ever wondered if it is really worth it to make baby clothes when you can buy them so cheaply? Well, there are two ways to answer this question. Firstly, it is possible to save money on baby clothes by using free patterns, like the patterns in my roundup, and by upcycling fabric from clothes you no longer wear.

Secondly, what better way is there to show your baby or the baby of someone you care about that you love them?

Oh, and thirdly, sewing is a really lovely hobby to nurture. It is relaxing and a great way to escape from the crazy fast-paced world in which we all live.

8. SHOULD YOU PREWASH THE FABRIC BEFORE SEWING IT?

It is always worth washing fabric before sewing it. Firstly, it’s a good idea to wash it to remove anything on or in the fabric that could irritate delicate baby skin.

Secondly, given that babies are so small, it is well worth washing the fabric to remove any shrinkage so that you know exactly how much fabric you will need to make an item of baby clothing.
